The Community Covenant Presbyterian Church is located in Fort Myers, Lee County, on the Southwest Coast of Florida. It ministers to an established area experiencing the growing pains of becoming more urbanized. The Church serves an area of approximately fifteen miles in radius, and is situated in a downtown residential neighborhood near the winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. The population has jumped from 54,539 in 1960 to more than 440,000 today and will be at 693,300 by 2030, according to the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council. Southwest Florida offers a choice of relaxed or active lifestyles, with various activities for young and old. The area boasts one of the nation's highest concentrations of golf courses, and outstanding marine-related recreation. Gulf beaches, including famed Sanibel Island, are world-renowned for their shelling and sunbathing activities. Lee County is the winter home of both the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox baseball teams. Lee County is economically diverse, relying heavily on tourism and agriculture. The economic base also includes commercial fishing, light industry, and a fast-growing services and retail sector. The Lee County School District of 58,000 students with 75 schools including 43 elementary, 15 middle and 13 high schools plus a number of magnet schools and specialty schools such as high-tech vocational schools and an alternative learning center. Higher educational institutions include Edison Community College and Florida Gulf Coast University. Southwest Florida boasts 205 public schools with more than 98,000 students enrolled during the 1995-1996 calendar year. All public schools are accredited by both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and by the Florida Department of Education. Several schools have been recognized both statewide as well as nationally. Southwest Florida is particularly proud of the Area Vocational-Technical Schools and higher-education institutions, which cater to the demands of local business and industry. Edison Community College offers Associate of Applied Science and Associate of Arts degrees. Florida's newest public university, Florida Gulf Coast University, located in Lee County, opened August 25, 1997. Cultural facilities include a new dinner theater, a performing arts hall, an intimate theater at the Lee County Alliance of the Arts, and another performing theater in downtown Fort Myers. The Nature Center of Lee County features displays of the area's natural habitat and contains a fine planetarium. Additionally, there is the Fort Myers Museum, and Imaginarium.
